Perhaps my version of Google is different to yours? I did a quick search on "cheap ebikes" and it showed me a fair amount of choice. If you want a bit of kit to turn your existing bike into an ebike then another quick search for "ebike conversion kit" shows lots of kits that are a lot cheaper, are far more efficient and offer far longer ranges. I even found a few mid-drive kits in that could make use of the gearing system rather than just power the front wheel direct. No, you can not. And it is disingenuous at best, dishonest at worst, to make that claim. However, you've missed the point, so let's spell it out: This device is for people who have an existing bike and want to ADD electric functionality to it. See how that works?
What confuses me a little is why, if you already have an existing bicycle, would you want to pay $500 to help you ride just a couple of miles to work and back. I'm certainly not stopping you from buying it but there seems to be loads of better options out there. YMMV.
